The jurors notified the court shortly after lunch that there had been a
development, prompting a dramatic scramble of lawyers, reporters and
Edwards’ family back to the courtroom.
But after eight days of weighting the future of a man who was one of the
Democrats brightest stars, the jury had little to show for their efforts.
There appeared to have been some misunderstanding, with Judge Eagles saying
she thought the jury had reached a verdict on all counts only to be
corrected by the jury foreman.
Witnesses inside the courtroom in Greenboro said the jurors looked visibly
frustrated as the judge ordered them to continue debating.
Edwards is accused of accepting nearly $1m in illegal campaign contributions
to hide his pregnant mistress while he campaigned for the White House.
The 58-year-old faces six counts: four of illegal campaign contributions, one
of conspiracy and one of making false statements.
Each charge carries up to five years in prison, meaning Edwards could face a
total of 30 years as well as fines of up to $1.5 million.
Over the course of the month-long trial, prosecutors detailed how Edwards
began an affair with Reille Hunter, a film maker on his failed 2008
campaign, that continued even as his wife Elizabeth was dying of cancer.
In an apparent attempt to hide Ms Hunter from both the media and his wife,
Edwards allegedly accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars from two elderly
donors, which he used to spirit Ms Hunter on a luxurious criss-cross around
the US, where she often stayed in upmarket hotels and borrowed mansions.
