John David Tagg, 36, was discovered by locals on Monday at the flat in Siolim village, about 15 km from Panaji, the capital of the Indian state.

Whilst early reports are suggesting he may have died in his sleep, police are refusing to confirm the
exact cause until a postmortem is conducted.

An official said: ‘They had come to Goa on the year end. The postmortem of the deceased will make the cause of death clear.’

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: ‘We can confirm the death of a British national on January 2 in Goa, India.

‘We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.’
