Former Rep. Eric Cantor apparently just missed becoming the first Jewish speaker — second in line to the presidency after the vice-president.
An aide to Boehner, the Republican House speaker who is quitting, dropped the bombshell Friday: Boehner had wanted to step down last year but Majority “Leader [Eric] Cantor’s loss in his primary changed that calculation.”
So reported the Huffington Post’s Sam Stein and Ryan Grim, who do not name the aide.
As majority leader, Cantor was already the highest ranking Jewish legislator in U.S. history. Some say he was the highest-ranking Jewish government official, but it’s not clear majority leader bests secretary of state, a post held by Henry Kissinger in the 1970s.

Hebrew University demographer takes a look into the future of Judaism: Will peace and security lead to a population boom or will uncertainty and conflict depress demographic figures?
Prof. Sergio DellaPergola
09.22.15, 10:17
At the start of Jewish New Year 5776, the Jewish people number about 14.3 million people, according to a definition similar to the one accepted by the Israeli Supreme Court.
Being a Jew today means first and foremost the willingness to express a self-identification with the Jewish people, including everything in the range between very religious and anti-religious, excluding people of a different religion.
Out of all these, there are about 6.3 million Jews living in the State of Israel (in addition to some 360,000 relatives who are not registered as Jews in the Interior Ministry) and about 8 million who live in the Diaspora: 5.7 million in the United States and 2.3 million in all other countries (mainly France, Canada, Britain, Russia, Argentina, Germany, Australia and Brazil).
A forecast for 2050 provides a high-probability scenario of about 20 million Jews in Israel and in the world, compared to a low-probability scenario of 14 million. According to a mid-probability scenario of 17 million, in 2050 the Jewish people will be able to return to its proportions before the Holocaust.

Michael Danby calls on new premier Turnbull to order FM Julie Bishop to ‘reverse slide towards appeasement of bellicose regime’
An Australian Jewish lawmaker called on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to reverse the nation’s current policy of rapprochement with Iran.
In a statement issued Monday, Michael Danby, a federal Labor member of parliament representing Melbourne Ports, said that Turnbull “can be a friend of Israel or a friend of the dangerous Iranian regime. He cannot be both.”
Danby has placed advertisements in local media demanding Turnbull order Foreign Minister Julie Bishop to “halt and reverse this slide towards appeasement of the hardline, bellicose regime in Tehran.”
Bishop in recent months has visited Iran, signed an intelligence-secret sharing agreement with Iran, and apparently offered to allow Iranian consulates in Sydney and Melbourne.
On Sept. 23, Bishop met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. According to unconfirmed reports, she invited Zarif to visit Australia.
