Jessica Ghawi, Theater Shooting Victim, Escaped Shooting Last Month

The parents of Jessica Ghawi have confirmed that their daughter was one of the 12 people killed in Friday morning’s shooting at a Dark Knight premiere in Aurora, Colo.

In an interview with KSAT, Ghawi’s parents also confirmed that a visiting friend, Brent Lowak, was among the 38 people wounded.

Ghawi, an aspiring sportscaster with an active online presence, also narrowly escaped a similar catastrophe in a Toronto shopping mall in early June, according to her blog.

Friends, colleagues and those who never met Ghawi in person confirmed her death and sent their emotion-laden condolences via Twitter early Friday morning. Mashable is still awaiting confirmation of victims from the Aurora Police Department.

Ghawi’s chilling final blog post entitled “Late Night Thoughts on the Eaton Center Shooting,” was a reflection on the shooting at Toronto’s Eaton Center in early June and its impact on her life. Ghawi was present at the scene of that event, but wrote that an “odd feeling” led her to “go outside and unknowingly out of harm’s way” before the shooter opened fire.

More from that post:

“I say all the time that every moment we have to live our life is a blessing. So often I have found myself taking it for granted. Every hug from a family member. Every laugh we share with friends. Even the times of solitude are all blessings. Every second of every day is a gift. After Saturday evening, I know I truly understand how blessed I am for each second I am given.

“I feel like I am overreacting about what I experienced. But I can’t help but be thankful for whatever caused me to make the choices that I made that day. My mind keeps replaying what I saw over in my head. I hope the victims make a full recovery. I wish I could shake this odd feeling from my chest. The feeling that’s reminding me how blessed I am. The same feeling that made me leave the Eaton Center. The feeling that may have potentially saved my life.”

Tweeting under the handle @JessicaRedfield, Ghawi’s final tweet was a response to a follower who criticized her for tweeting during the film:

Earlier in the night, Ghawi tweeted that she had to “coerce” a date into seeing the movie with her:

The rest of Ghawi’s Twitter stream shows she was a bright and funny young woman with an interest in a wide variety of sports and a journalists’ appreciation for grammar jokes who used the social network to chat with friends, talk sports and learn more about sportscasting as a profession:

Ghawi also wrote for Busted Coverage, a blog “dedicated to all things men: booze, ladies and sports.” Her latest piece was an early season prediction of the NHL’s Stanley Cup Playoffs.
