Japan’s ‘Shadow Shogun’ acquitted of breaking funding laws

He claims the DPJ has become fractured under the stewardship of Mr Noda, who
is struggling to deal with the nation’s long-term economic problems at the
same time as finding ways to pay for the reconstruction of areas of
north-east Japan devastated in the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Other matter that he has taken the government to task over include the
populist issues of the reactivation of Japan’s nuclear reactors and the
trans-Pacific Partnership free trade pact.

Mr Ozawa has long held the reputation of being a back-room fixer who uses his
contacts and influence adroitly. Many of the DPJ politicians who now sit in
government owe that to his patronage and Mr Ozawa is calling those favours
in.

The DPJ suspended Mr Ozawa’s membership over the legal challenge but, with his
acquittal, will be obliged to permit him to rejoin the party.

In an internet broadcast ahead of the court’s ruling, Mr Ozawa said he would “play
any role that providence calls on me to play.”
