Although Japanese people are known for enjoying luxury and rich lifestyles, the study reveals that many single women in the Asian country are poor and are worried about their living conditions.
Japanese women who have children or parents to take care of find it hard to pay for their living expenses and their children’s education or provide nursing for their parents.
Female diplomat Mitsu Kimata believs the Japanese society needs to provide more support for women with money problems.
The National Social Security Institute says Japan must work to improve these women’s situation and create a safety net for them.
The institute warns that if Japan does not interpolate changes in its tax program and social welfare system, which is based on benefits for married couples, there will be higher levels of poverty for single women.
The center also estimated that by the year 2030, one in five Japanese women will be single.
