Warring factions from some of the galaxy’s biggest battles have put their weapons down and gathered in central Sydney to celebrate Japanese pop culture.
The Sydney Convention Centre on Saturday hosted SMASH!, a manga and anime convention where costumed devotees of Japanese pop culture came together.
Both heroes and villains from a range of titles were in attendance, but fans seemed content to call off rivalries for the day.
The fans were drawn to SMASH! for its cosplay (costume play) events, animation workshops, video game competitions, merchandise booths and expert panels featuring Japanese voice actors from hit television series.
Among the almost 6,000 attendees were a myriad of characters from some of the world’s most popular manga and anime shows but there was a strong showing from fan favourites such as Naruto, Bleach and One Piece.
The fervour of the fans was obvious and many had made their own costumes, pieced together over several years of dedicated collecting.
“It’s a chance to go a bit more overboard with what you like,” Alanah May, dressed in the latest Lolita fashion from the Harajuku district of Tokyo, told AAP.
“A lot of money goes into it that we can’t really disclose because we feel bad about spending that much.”
SMASH! president Thomas Munro said the event, which started out with about 1,000 fans at UNSW, highlighted the growing popularity of manga and anime in Australia.
“The growth (of patrons at the event) is explosive really, and it shows also how big the community is growing as well.”
