Japanese PM reshuffles cabinet

Noda argues that doubling the 5 percent sales tax to at least 10 percent in 2015 is necessary for the country’s economy.

“We are making a major decision that will determine the fate of Japan’s future within the next 20 days,” Noda said, adding that differences between the ruling party.

The premier has named five new ministers after growing pressure from opposition lawmakers who set the removal of the ministers as a condition to back the tax bill. Noda’s defense minister was among those removed.

Japan, which is still recovering from last year’s major tsunami and nuclear crisis, is also facing worsening fiscal problems as its population ages.

The cabinet reshuffle is the second one this year.

The tax raise is aimed at helping slash the massive public debt and fund the rising welfare costs.

Noda is now looking to submit bills tied to taxes and social security reforms to the lower house of parliament before it ends its session in June.
