Japan threatens to shoot N Korea rocket

Defense Minister Naoki Tanaka issued a directive to intercept the rocket if it threatened Japan’s ‘territorial integrity.’

North Korea has reportedly said it would go ahead with the planned launch of a satellite on a rocket somewhere between April 12 and 16.

Pyongyang said the country sought to put a satellite into orbit in order to commemorate the 100th birthday of its founding father Kim Il-sung, who was born on April 15, 1912.

North Korea insists the launch is for scientific and peaceful purposes.

The United States, South Korea, and Japan, however, claim that it will be a camouflaged test for a long-range missile.

On Tuesday, the Japanese defense minister had issued an earlier order to the country’s forces to plan “destruction measures against ballistic missiles.”

On Friday, he said in Tokyo that the cabinet had approved a measure to shoot down the rocket if necessary.

Earlier this week, South Korea also threatened to destroy any North Korean rocket that ‘violated’ its territory.
