The Kumamoto and Oita prefectures, located on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu are threatened by swollen rivers and mudslides after registering record-level rainfall in the past 72 hours.
On Friday, Seven people were reported missing. Military troops have been deployed to the region for disaster relief efforts at the request of local governors.
The evacuation orders affect 85,000 households in the prefectures of Fukuoka, Saga, Kumamoto and Oita, the Kyodo news said.
In Fukuoka prefecture alone, around 190,000 people from 65,000 households were given evacuation notice, while another 140,000 have been advised to vacate their homes as well.
Japan Meteorological Agency said that rainfall in some parts of the island had reached nearly 100 millimeters in an hour with more heavy rain and landslides expected.
