U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and James Baker, a seasoned American diplomat who once led the State Department, appeared on Charlie Rose Wednesday evening to discuss the top priorities of U.S. diplomacy around the world.
Towards the end of the discussion, which was held in Washington, Baker and Clinton spoke about the necessity of preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, noting that containment is not an option, and in the opinion of Baker, any military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities should come from the United States because the U.S. is the only country with the ability to stop Iran’s program with force.
“We out to try every possible avenue we can to see if we can get them to correct their desire and goal of acquiring a nuclear weapon, but we cannot let them acquire that weapon,” Baker said.
Baker, whose career includes posts as the Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of State, and White House Chief of Staff, concluded that if the U.S. administration’s current policies do not work in stopping Iran’s pursuit of a nuclear weapon, “we ought to take them out”.
Charlie Rose quickly went to Hillary Clinton for a response, which drew huge laughter from herself, as well as the crowd.
