Jalili arrives in Iraq for P5+1 talks

Saeed Jalili arrived in Baghdad at the head of a high-ranking delegation on Monday night for the talks between Iran and the P5+1 group — Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States, and Germany — slated for May 23, IRNA reported.

He was welcomed by Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari at Baghdad airport.

The latest round of talks between Iran and the six members of the P5+1 group was held in Istanbul on April 14. Both sides hailed the discussions as constructive and agreed to hold the next round of the talks in the Iraqi capital.

Tehran and the P5+1 group previously held two rounds of talks, one in Geneva in December 2010 and another in Istanbul in January 2011.

Earlier in the day, Jalili held a meeting with International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Yukiya Amano in Tehran.

He called the meeting positive, saying, “We had very good talks with [Yukiya] Amano today and, God willing, we will have good cooperation in the future.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the main supporters of the idea of [nuclear] disarmament at the international level, the campaign against the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy for NPT (nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) signatories,” he added.

Jalili also noted that a fatwa recently issued by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei provides great capacity for nuclear disarmament.

On February 22, Ayatollah Khamenei said the Islamic Republic considers the pursuit and possession of nuclear weapons “a grave sin” from every logical, religious and theoretical standpoint.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s approach in opposing nuclear weapons is an important capacity for the agency and Iran will actively work with the agency toward [nuclear] disarmament…and peaceful use of nuclear energy,” he went on to say.

Amano arrived in Tehran in the early hours of Monday, accompanied by Herman Nackaerts, the IAEA deputy director general for safeguards, and Rafael Mariano Grossi, the agency’s assistant director general for policy, and was welcomed by Iranian Ambassador to the IAEA Ali Asghar Soltanieh.

Before his meeting with Jalili, he met with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Director Fereydoun Abbasi.
