“Within the Indonesian constitution, there is a statement that goes like this; ‘be active for world peace.’In this context Indonesia has the opportunity to ask the government of Myanmar to guarantee that the human rights of the Rohingya Muslims are upheld,” Indonesia’s Executive Secretary, Izzuddin Syamma told Press TV on Saturday.
“The law has to be enforced and upheld to protect the rights of those in society,” an Indonesian citizen said.
Reports say 650 Rohingya Muslims were killed as of June 28 alone during clashes in the western region of Rakhine. This is while 1,200 others are missing and 80,000 more have been displaced.
“Indonesia is active in trying to persuade the Myanmar government to resolve the problem concerning the Rohingya Muslims in a peaceful way. Indonesia is also talking to the international institutions such as the Islamic Conference Organization and the UNHCR to end the situation,” said Mahfudz Siddiq, Indonesian lawmaker.
The government of Myanmar refuses to recognize Rohingyas, who it claims are not natives and classifies as illegal migrants, although the Rohingya are said to be Muslim descendants of Persian, Turkish, Bengali, and Pathan origin, who migrated to Myanmar as early as the 8th century.
The UN says decades of discrimination have left the Rohingyas stateless, with Myanmar implementing restrictions on their movement and withholding land rights, education and public services.
However, the UN refugee agency has snubbed the idea of setting up refugee camps to accommodate the Rohingyas.
Over the past two years, waves of ethnic Muslims have attempted to flee by boats in the face of systematic oppression by the Myanmar government.
