When at the W20 summit in Berlin, Ivanka Trump, special assistant to Donald Trump, was asked what her job entails. She answered with confusion , admitting that she did not know; however she was learning more and more every day.
Now speaking with American media , Ivanka claims that she “know[s] enough now to be a much more proactive voice inside the White House.”
Ivanka gave herself praise for being a “millennial” and a “female entrepreneur”, disregarding the fact that her company was financed into existence by her father and that would disqualify her as an entrepreneur.
Nevertheless, Ivanka is now working hard to profit from being the First Daughter. She is ignoring critics who are calling this stunt an improper usage of her position in the White House, and campaigning to promote her new book; a diatribe on women who work, offering advice on:
• Advancing women in the workplace
• Balancing family and professional life
• Personal fulfillment
Journalist Fatima Goss Graves explained Ivanka’s inability to understand what women face in the workplace as nepotism on steroids.
Graves points out that Ivanka’s advice is oblivious to real world issues such as:
• Gender pay gap
• Working for minimum wage
• Complications of race
• Working mothers
To put it plainly, Ivanka has never faced hardship as a woman working because her employment was handed to her by her father. Calling Ivanka an entrepreneur is an insult to the thousands of men and women who start their own businesses and either succeed or fail without the financial backing of their parents.
By rebranding herself as a champion for women, Ivanka has forgotten there is a trail of public comments following her that show she is lying about caring for women’s issues.
Back in 2013, Ivanka was ousted in the press for advocating that women should return to work immediately after giving birth in her own company – a stark divergence from her public persona.
Marisa Kraxberger, former executive for Ivanka’s branded corporation, told the press about that one time she asked for paid maternity leave. Kraxberger recalled Ivanka’s comment to her: “Well, we don’t have maternity leave policy here; I went back to work one week after having my child, so that’s just not something I’m used to.”
This fact was not lost on Sigmar Gabriel , a foreign minister for Germany who described Ivanka’s fortune as a clear cut case of nepotism, comparing the Trumps o “members of the royal family.”
Gabriel went on to say: “For me there are things that remain strange, like for example the visit of his daughter to Germany which was treated almost like a world event, while the mix of politics with family and business reminds us instead of nepotism and would be unimaginable here.”
