Flying into Armidale there was no doubt the Federal Nationals Leader Warren Truss was in town to secure a deal.
After several months of courting the independent member for the Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay, the new relationship has been formalised today.
The negotiations had centred on Mr Torbay’s requirement of being allowed more autonomy under the party structure.
The pair shook hands on the deal on the lawns of the University of New England’s Booloominbah, where he is Chancellor.

The Chairman of the Nationals New England Electorate Council, Greg Kachel said Richard Torbay is the right candidate for the seat because he has such a high profile and he has done a great job the Northern Tablelands.
“I liken it to a football team when a player, the best player puts himself on the market and says here I am, I’m available, any party, any group would be silly not to say well come and have a yarn to us, we’d love you to be part of our team.”
“The Nationals need to win seats if we are to go into government … “
Mr Kachel said the move has come out of left field for many in the local branch.
“I’ve fielded a lot of calls in the last few weeks, and Senator john Williams my boss has well .. all I’ve been saying to the members is look democratic right to have your view, these are the reasons why, we need to win seats, he has indicated he wants to go federal, he might as well be on our team and wouldn’t say a lot of them have changed their mind, but at least they understand where the party is coming from.”
Making the announcement in Armidale today Mr Torbay said he doubts the Independent brand will have any power at the next election.
“Look I don’t think there will be an Independent MP in the next federal parliament and I think that it’ll be some time before we see a hung parliament again and probably not in our lifetime. People will be voting away from that I think in significant numbers. The best thing I can do is be part of a team that delivers for country and rural and regional areas.”
The Nationals Leader Warren Truss said Richard Torbay and the Nationals share a common bond.
“Richard Torbay is a great local champion for the region, he’s got fantastic experience at a local level, in state government and I’m sure he will bring that same forthright representation to the federal parliament, he is the kind of guy that we want in our party room to stand up for regional Australia”
The Federal Independent member for New England Tony Windsor said he is still determined to run.
He said he’s not going to comment on potential candidates or start campaigning for the next election now there is a lot of good work still to do.
He said his intention is to run.
