Warren first wrote about Earth Hour in late 2006, describing the idea of saving energy and increasing awareness by turning out the lights for one hour, starting in 2007. By 2009 it had swept around the world; ten thousand people gathered in Toronto to hear Nellie Furtado sing Turn Out The Light.
It never caught on in the USA; even the website was bogus. For the rest of the world, it seems to have peaked in 2009 and has been sliding since. Last year I wrote that the lights are going out not with a bang, but a whimper. This year they don’t appear to be going out at all. There is more twitter traffic from the Xerox 914 on Mad Men than there is from #earthhour.
They are trying; there is even a legitimate USA website this year, but it really does seem to be lights out on Earth Hour.

It is a shame really, it was a good idea, and it did raise awareness. At 8:30PM on Saturday I will turn out some lights and light a candle. May its memory be for a blessing.
