nsnbc : Italy’s Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano said the OSCE, under Italian chairmanship, will in every possible way contribute to the establishment of peace in Ukraine.
Alfano made that statement as he addressed the Permanent Council of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in the Austrian capital Vienna and commented on the upcoming Italian OSCE chairmanship. The OSCE also released a statement on its website saying:
“Alfano said Italy would continue supporting all OSCE efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict and urged the implementation of the Minsk agreements, in full respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity and independence of Ukraine.”
According to the Italian Foreign Minister, the situation in Ukraine once again underpinned the importance of such an institution as the OSCE.
“The crisis in and around Ukraine has called into question the principles on which the OSCE is based; on the other hand, however, it has clarified – once and for all – how much the world needs the OSCE to resolve the crisis,” he said.
Italy will assume OSCE chairmanship next year. Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurtz is the incumbent OSCE Chairperson-in-Office. The implementation of the Minsk Accords reached by the so-called Normandy Four, Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France, with the EU and OSCE on the sidelines and the OSCE observing the implementation, has virtually stalled.
Many independent analysts noted that it is highly probable that upcoming elections in both Russia and in the Ukraine will further complicate the resumption of the implementation as both Presidents, Putin and Poroshenko, are likely to perceive continued tensions as “beneficial” for their respective election campaigns.
