Italy wants three men living in Australia

Italian authorities say they will seek the extradition of three men living in Australia after they were sentenced in absentia to long jail terms in Italy for drug trafficking.

Fairfax reported on Saturday that the three men are accused of being associated with the Calabrian Mafia, the Ndrangheta, and have also been under investigation by Australian authorities.

The three, aged in their 40s and 50s, were found guilty of involvement in a plot to smuggle 500 kilograms of cocaine to Australia.

Fairfax says the drugs have never been found.

Two of the men wanted by Italy live in Melbourne and one on the Gold Coast.

Fairfax says Italy’s Ministry of Justice will approach Attorney General Nicola Roxon over the extradition request.
