The 87-year-old president chastised lawmakers for their failure to respond to the country’s crisis and urged them to form a new government “without delay.”
He accused them of failing to make key economic and institutional reforms needed in the country.
“I have a duty to be frank. If I find myself again facing the deafness of those with whom I have clashed in the past, I will not hesitate to hold them accountable before the country,” the Italian president said.
After accepting an appeal by Italy’s major political parties to stand for a second term, Napolitano was reelected president on Saturday.
“I could not decline. I was worried about the fate of the country,” Napolitano said.
In their sixth round of voting, 1,007 Italian lawmakers and regional representatives voted for Napolitano, putting an end to a two-month political deadlock.
Napolitano is expected to put together a broad coalition government to tackle the country’s financial crisis.
Over the past decade, Italy has been the slowest growing economy in the eurozone.
