Italians hold demos in Rome

Thousands of far-right activists took to the streets of Rome on Saturday to protest against the rising cost of living in Italy.

“Taxes are going up, petrol is going up, Monti’s government is a robber government!” some of the protesters chanted.

“Social butchery, this is the government of big capital!” others chanted at the demonstration, which the organizers said 20,000 people attended.

A demonstration was also held by people protesting a high-speed rail-line project linking Italy’s northern city of Turin to Lyon in France.

A few hundred people attended the demonstration, and some of the participants later occupied part of a highway around Rome.

In addition, thousands of workers in plastic helmets held a demonstration for greater state assistance for the construction sector, which has been hit hard by the global economic crisis and a recession accelerated by budget cuts.

“We want to tell the government that if it continues looking at the markets and not at the country, it’ll stay there looking because there won’t be a country,” Susanna Camusso, who heads the biggest CGIL union, addressed the crowd.

“You can’t save Italy without saving Italian workers,” she said.

Newly released data shows Italy’s unemployment rate at a monthly record high of 9.2 percent in January, up from 8.9 percent in December, with the figure toping 31 percent for young people aged 15 to 24.
