Italian workers protest labor reforms

More than 50,000 workers participated in the Friday demonstrations, calling for democracy in the workplace and accusing the government of acting in the interests of the banks and industrial groups, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Monti is expected to unveil his much awaited job plan to the parliament by end of March. Many fear the plan will include a provision that scraps the article 18 of the Italian Workers’ Statute, which provides employees strong protection against unfair lay-offs.

The demonstration called by metal workers union Fiom-CGIL also protest automaker Fiat’s contract signed December 13 of last year that introduces more flexible labor practices for its 86,000 Italian workers.

Italy, one of the eurozone’s biggest economies, has fallen into recession after its economy contracted by 0.2 percent in the third quarter and by 0.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The worsening debt crisis has forced EU governments to adopt harsh austerity measures and tough economic reforms, triggering incidents of social unrest and massive protests in many European countries.
