Italian man who lost job kills his two young children

Italy has seen a spate of suicides related to the economic crisis in recent weeks, including men whose businesses have failed or who were unable to pay their tax bills.

Mr Turrini died instantly after hitting the ground in a car parking area next to the apartment block.

The two children initially survived and were taken to a local hospital but died within a few minutes of each other despite the efforts of doctors to keep them alive.

“They were a happy family,” said a neighbour, identified only as Elisabetta. “I’d known them for four or five years and I watched the children grow up. I heard a cry and I went downstairs to see what was happening. The little boy was still alive, I could hear him breathing. The baby was also breathing but it was already very weak.”

Mr Turrini’s father reportedly committed suicide about a year ago by hanging himself.

There have been at least 30 austerity-related suicides this year in Italy, as the unemployment rate climbs to 10 per cent – the highest since 2001.

A sweeping package of spending cuts and tax increases has been introduced by Mario Monti, the prime minister, a former European competition commissioner and economist appointed in November after the euro zone debt crisis forced Silvio Berlusconi to resign.

They are intended to balance the country’s budget and reduce its 1.9 trillion euro national debt, but are proving deeply unpopular.

Earlier this month the widows of more than 25 businessmen who have taken their own lives because of the recession marched through the city of Bologna to protest against the impact of austerity measures.

They were led by the widow of a 58-year-old man who set fire to himself outside a tax office in the city, suffering horrific burns before dying a week later.

A right-wing party hung life-size dummies from bridges in Rome earlier this month to protest against the rising suicide rate.

The suicides were the result of “cuts and elimination of rights from a non-elected government imposed by Europe”, said Giuliano Castellino, a spokesman for La Destra (The Right).
