Italian mafia boss arrested in basement bunker

Giuseppe Aquino’s bunker could only be reached via an
electronically-controlled trap door so police drilled through the floor to
arrest the fugitive who was unarmed and even shook hands with the officer in
charge complimenting him for his work.

Police also found sophisticated technical equipment in the cellar that Aquino
insisted was only used to store wine.

“It was a place that he evidently thought was secure and where he could
continue his illegal activities as boss of the clan,” Gratteri said.

Aquino is one of the leaders of the Aquino-Coluccio clan which is said to be a
major player in international cocaine trafficking and also has interests in
construction, hotels and other businesses, Gratteri said.

Italy’s minister for the interior Annamaria Cancellieri, welcomed Aquino’s
arrest and said the government would continue its fight against the Mafia
with “firmness and determination”.

Aquino’s hiding place is simply the latest in a string of eccentric locations
where Mafia bosses have been found by police in recent years.

In April a boss from the Naples Camorra, was arrested after he was discovered
hiding in a refuge behind a mirrored wardrobe in his home..

Three years ago police arrested another mafia boss Giuseppe Bastone who was
found in an underground bunker equipped with a skateboard he planned to use
through a 200 yard secret tunnel to escape capture.

Giuseppe Setola, a hit man for the Neopolitan Camorra, evaded arrest during a
police raid on his home north of Naples in January 2009 when he fled down a
tunnel linked to sewers beneath his hideout.
