Auguste Piccard was the first man to reach the Earths stratosphere. What he saw when he was 10 miles high is why his journey is not taught in school. He described the Earth as a flat disc with an upturned edge in Popular Science Magazine August 1932.
Here is an excellent video showing the launch and effort put forward by so many to make this widely known about (at the time) and celebrated event possible.
Piccard then went to work for the US government designing capsules for what would become NASA.
They suppressed his flat earth declaration, but still use his design concept to this day in the only real manned voyages NASA does: capsules and balloons.
