Days of Palestine, Jerusalem -Far-right member of Israeli Knesset Betzalel Smotrich has called for reinforcing ward segregation between Arab and Jewish women in Israeli hospitals.
Smotrich, from the Israeli Jewish Home, which is part of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, is an extremist Jewish settler who does not hide the real Israeli sentiments towards the Palestinians.
He has in the past stressed on the need to separate from the Palestinians, the Israeli news website Ynet News said, noting this is a view shared by those in the ultra-nationalist-religious camp represented by Jewish Home.
Israeli government remained silent over Smotrich remarks, who received massive support from the Israelis on social media.
On Twitter, Smotrich wrote: “It is natural that my wife would not want to lie next to someone whose baby son might want to murder my son,” referring to the Arab women as Israeli occupation always kills Palestinians claiming they plan to murder Israelis.
Smotrich’s wife said to Israeli TV Channel 10: “It is not pleasant for me to lie next to Arab women,” referring to her experiences giving birth in hospital.
Asked if she would have a problem if an Arab doctor delivered her baby, she replied: “The moment of birth is a sacred moment, a pure moment. It is a moment that is very Jewish. I would be very pleased if Jewish hands were to touch my baby the moment it enters the world.”
Ben Caspit, writing in the newspaper Ma’ariv, said Smotrich: “He does not demand to set up concentration camps and to build gas chambers, but he does have a racist ideology.”
Ahmed Tibi, an Arab MK and a gynaecologist, said: “It is a blatant racist comment… As a doctor, if Smotrich or his wife needed medical help from me, I would give it without hesitation. I have treated many racists in the past.”
