Israeli missiles start facing Egypt

“An Iron Dome Active Missile Defense System battery is currently deployed near [the city of] Eilat as part of its operational deployment program, which includes changing the locations of the batteries from time to time,” the Israeli military announced in a statement issued on Thursday, AFP reported.

The deployment took place on Monday, marking the first time it has been set up in the border area, an Israeli official said on condition of anonymity.

Iron Dome is produced with the financial support of the United States. In recent months, the Obama administration has granted Israel financial aid to help it purchase more batteries for the missile system.

In May, the US House of Representatives appropriated USD 947 million for the Iron Dome as well David’s Sling and Arrow, two other Israeli missile systems.

The contributions, which are sourced from US taxpayer money, are not included in the approximately USD three billion, Washington annually grants Tel Aviv in military assistance.

The allocations make Israel the top recipient of US military aid. This comes as the US government has been forced to make major cuts in its own military spending on account of financial dire straits.

Relations between Cairo and Tel Aviv have deteriorated since last year’s revolution that overthrew former dictator Hosni Mubarak, a long-time and staunch ally of Israel.
