‘Israel will not debate Iran war in public’

Addressing the Jewish community of Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Thursday, Shimon Peres noted that economic sanctions were the first course of action for putting pressure on the Islamic Republic to give up its nuclear energy program.

“I think we have to first try sanctions, and then we shall see [what to do about Iran’s nuclear energy program],” he said, adding that “in the case of South Africa, sanctions did the job,” as they did in Libya and Ukraine.

“If we have to choose, let’s start with the non-violent [options]…saying very clearly (that) all other options are on the table,” Perez noted.

The Israeli president then emphasized that if Israel planned to launch a military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, there was no need “to make a public debate [about it] ahead of time.”

On Sunday, March 4, Peres accused Iran of having plans to dominate the entire Middle East region and control its economic resources.

Addressing a meeting of American Israel Public Affairs Conference (AIPAC) in Washington, he added, “Iran’s ambition is to control the Middle East, so it can control a major part of the world’s economy. It must be stopped. And it will be stopped.”

The Israeli president’s claims about prevailing in a possible war with Iran come as the regime waged a 22-day Christmas war on the densely populated Gaza Strip in 2008 which left more than 1,400 Palestinians dead including at least 300 children.

The Gaza War saw Hamas preventing Tel Aviv from materializing its stated aims of destroying the Palestinian resistance movement.

Fighters with the Lebanese resistance movement of Hezbollah also defended Lebanon against Israeli invaders during the 33-Day War in 2006 and Tel Aviv was compelled to withdraw its troops without having achieved any of its objectives.

Tehran has frequently refuted West’s claims that Iran seeks to develop nuclear weapons under cover of its civilian nuclear energy program.

Iran has also promised crushing response to any possible military strike against its nuclear facilities noting that despite strict inspections, International Atomic Energy Agency has never been able to provide evidence about military diversion in Iran’s nuclear energy program.
