Israel will continue construction of a separation barrier in West Bank within next few weeks after a five-year delay caused by legal appeals filed by Palestinians and international pressure, Israel’s public radio quoted an army officer on Thursday as saying.
Colonel Ofer Hindi, who is in charge of the barrier project, told the Israeli Supreme Court on Wednesday that work will initially begin around a group of settlements near the West Bank town of Bethlehem.
He further said work will continue next year around Maale Adumim, one of the biggest settlements in the West Bank.
Israel suspended construction of the barrier after Palestinians filed legal appeals against the project as well as international pressure over the route of the barrier, which cuts into the West Bank.
Israel began work on the barrier, which is planned to extend 760 kilometers, in 2002 during the second intifada on the pretext of security problems.
In 2004, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a resolution demanding Israel to destroy those parts of the barrier inside the West Bank and stop further construction in the territory. Israel has never recognized the ruling.
