‘Israel to delay Iran war until Sep. or Nov.’

Barack Obama has taken Israel’s warnings about a possible military offensive against the Islamic Republic seriously, the Sunday Times quoted the unnamed US official as saying.

The Washington source said Obama “might visit in the summer to reassure the Israelis that the US commitment to defend Israel is unshakable and thus thwart a possible autumn attack,” Ynetnews reported.

During his meeting with the Israeli prime minister, Obama reportedly insisted that any attack on Iran should be postponed until after the US presidential elections in November, possibly even until next spring.

The source revealed that Benjamin Netanyahu has consented to delaying a strike, but wished to know until when. “The question is how much time,” he reportedly said.

The US, Israel and some of their allies have accused Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program.

The US and the EU have used this pretext to impose sanctions against Iran, while Tel Aviv has issued threats of a military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities. Washington has repeatedly threatened Iran with “all options” on the table.

The Islamic Republic has strongly refuted Western allegations regarding its nuclear energy program, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful objectives.

Tel Aviv’s threats against the Islamic Republic come as the Israeli regime is widely believed to possess between 200 and 400 atomic warheads, something that it has never denied under its official policy of nuclear ambiguity. Additionally, the Israelis have persistently refused to allow any international inspection of their nuclear facilities.

The IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities, due to its policy of nuclear transparency, and has never found any evidence indicating that Tehran’s nuclear energy program has been diverted towards weapons production.
