Israel refutes diplomacy on Iran N-issue

At a Friday joint press conference with his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper in Ottawa, Netanyahu dismissed the idea of dialogue as a “trap,” and urged the world powers not to pursue diplomatic paths to settle the issues regarding Iran’s peaceful nuclear energy program.

The remarks came on the same day as US President Barack Obama warned Israel against “the profound costs” and “unintended consequences” of any military action against Iran.

The controversy between the US and Israel over Iran has once again surfaced just ahead of the upcoming meeting of Obama and Netanyahu in Washington on March 5, when the two leaders are expected to discuss their plans to halt Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

Meanwhile, Iran and the world’s six major powers (P5+1 group) have repeatedly expressed readiness to continue dialogues over the issue.

Iran and the P5+1 group — Russia, China, France, Britain, the US, and Germany — held two rounds of talks, one in Geneva in December 2010 and another in Istanbul, Turkey in January 2011.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program.

The US and the EU have used the pretext to impose international and unilateral sanctions against Iran, while Washington and Tel Aviv have issued threats of a military strike against Iran’s nuclear installations.

Iran maintains that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
