Israel not stopwatch in hand for Iran war

“We’re not standing with a stopwatch in hand. It’s not a matter of days or weeks, but also not of years. The result must be removal of the threat of nuclear weapons in Iran,” Benjamin Netanyahu claimed in a televised interview on Thursday.

The Israeli premier noted that his preferred choice would be for Iran to halt its nuclear program and dismantle the uranium enrichment facility located in Fordow nuclear site.

“I hope there won’t be a war at all, and that the pressure on Iran will succeed…. That would make me [the] happiest,” he added.

Netanyahu said for him making a decision was not the problem, but the main problem was making the right decision.

“If you don’t make the decision and don’t succeed in preventing this [emergence of a nuclear Iran], to whom will you explain this – to the historians?” he said.

The remarks come after Netanyahu failed during his latest visit to Washington, last weekend, to get US President Barack Obama’s agreement for a military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities.

Following his meeting with Netanyahu, Obama said on Tuesday that Washington would continue to explore diplomatic options to address Iran’s nuclear energy program, trying to distance himself from the excessive warmongering rhetoric against the Islamic Republic.

At a White House news conference on Tuesday, Obama said, “We have a window through which we can resolve this issue peacefully. We have put forward an international framework that is applying unprecedented pressure. The Iranians just stated that they are willing to return to the negotiating table. And we’ve got the opportunity, even as we maintain that pressure, to see how it plays out.”

Meanwhile, the Israeli daily Ha’aretz in cooperation with the Tel Aviv University conducted a poll during Netanyahu’s Washington visit last Sunday and Monday showing that 58 percent of the respondents were against a military strike by Israel on Iran if Washington is not willing to accompany Tel Aviv.
