‘Israel liable for Gaza energy crisis’

“Israel is directly responsible for the crisis of energy shortage,” Mohamed Awad, Hamas’ foreign minister, told a news conference in the Gaza City on Thursday.

“The crisis must end soon and all the parties are called to help resolve it,” he added.

Meanwhile, a senior Hamas leader accused both Israel and the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority of being behind Gaza’s energy crisis.

“Israel and the Palestinian Authority are 100 percent responsible for the ongoing crisis and it is a conspiracy to topple the Hamas rule in the Gaza Strip,” Mohammed al-Zahar said.

He called on Egypt “to help the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip to resolve the crisis.”

Al-Zahar added, “We know that Egypt is passing through its own fuel crisis, but Egypt has to help us end our humanitarian crisis.”

Gaza’s sole electricity-generating plant stopped working in late February after Egypt blocked the flow of diesel fuel through underground tunnels into the besieged territory.

Some residents of the coastal enclave held demonstrations in front of the Rafah crossing to protest Egypt’s move in blocking fuel shipments.

Gazans have been struggling with the blackouts under Israel’s tight blockade, which has caused a severe decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty in the enclave.

The full-scale land, aerial, and naval siege, which was imposed by Israel on the territory in 2007, has turned the Gaza Strip into the world’s largest open-air prison.
