Israel Cuts Gas Supplies to Gaza in Midst of Winter

The Israeli government is supplying the occupied Gaza Strip with less than 13 percent of the natural gas it needs to sustain itself, as it has cut overall supplies by 50 percent since early December, residents and officials say.

“People are suffering from the shortage … especially because a lot of cars had been converted to use gas instead of petrol due to the high prices of petrol,” Tholfikar Swairjo, a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) in Gaza told Al Jazeera, Wednesday.

Swairjo accused Israel of decreasing gas supplies to Gaza by at least 50 percent as part of its psychological plan to push Gazans against the ruling Hamas government, who were democratically elected in 2006.

His comments came a few days after Mohamed al-Abadaleh, a spokesperson for an association of fuel and gas station owners in Gaza, told the International Middle East Media Center that it was “week four since … Israeli authorities severely decreased cooking gas supplies for the Gaza Strip.”

Abadaleh stressed that current consumption is much higher than the usual required daily amount of 300 tons due to it being winter.

Ramy Abdu, director of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor who is based in Gaza, told Al Jazeera that several hospitals and schools have no gas and that more than 20 percent of households are without the resource.

According to locals, since the Israeli blockade on Gaza in 2006, Israel has used the same tactics against Gazans by cutting gas supplies.

Gazans depend on gas for agricultural purposes, heat and transport. A lack of electricity in Gaza further increases dependency on the resource.
