‘Israel attack on Iran total madness’

In an interview with Germany’s official news agency, DPA in Berlin on Tuesday, Mohamed ElBaradei said that he did not think an Israeli attack on Iran was imminent, adding “I think anybody who is going to attack Iran, frankly, will be totally crazy.”

ElBaradei stated that if Israel actually attacked Iran, Tehran would have the support of every Iranian and “pretty much everybody in the Middle East and a lot of people around the world.”

“I pray that this will never happen…. I think the Israelis…[will] realize that this will diminish their security instead of adding to their security,” he added.

Asked what he would tell Israel when it says it does not believe Iran’s claims about the peaceful nature of its nuclear energy program, ElBaradei said: “Why should they [Iranians] believe Israel?”

“Israel is sitting on 200 [nuclear] bombs. There is a sense of insecurity in the Middle East. You need to engage in good faith and establish a Middle East free from weapons of mass destruction,” he added.

Former IAEA chief noted that the future nuclear talks between Iran and P5+1 – including US, UK, Russia, China, France and Germany – will not lead to a breakthrough in the nuclear stand-off.

“The issue is only going to be resolved when the Americans and the Iranians sit at the negotiating table and find a way to live together,” he said.

The US and Israel have been escalating war rhetoric against Iran in recent months, claiming that there is diversion in the country’s nuclear energy program towards military purposes.

Refuting their claims, Tehran argues that as a committed member of IAEA and a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty it is fully entitled to peaceful uses of the nuclear energy.
