Islamic militants detained in France ‘planned to kidnap Jewish magistrate’

French anti-terrorism legislation allows for suspects to be held for four
days, or until Tuesday.

Three of the 19 people arrested on Friday have already been released, and
those still in custody could be charged later Tuesday. Paris prosecutor
Francois Molins was to hold a press conference around midday.

The alleged militants were netted in antiterrorist swoops in different French
cities a week after self-confessed al-Qaeda militant Mohamed Merah was shot
dead following his killing spree in which he killed seven people.

The French opposition has criticised the presence of television news cameras
during the arrests as the images could be seen to bolster the chances of
right-wing President Nicolas Sarkozy’s re-election later this month.

Sarkozy on Tuesday declined to confirm the kidnapping accusation but said it
was “plausible”.

“It’s not for me to confirm as there’s a judicial process under way, but
if we carried out these arrests and are questioning them it’s because there
were extremely serious elements,” Sarkozy told the Canal Plus
television network.

Sarkozy has been edging ahead of Socialist rival Francois Hollande in voter
intentions since the Merah killings, bolstering his security credentials and
drawing voters away from the far-right National Front, according to latest
polls.

France on Monday announced the expulsion of five radical Islamic preachers –
an Algerian, a Malian, a Saudi, a Turk and a Tunisian – as part of a
crackdown in the wake of the Merah killings.
