Is Cell Phone “Addiction” Increasing Cancer Rates In Sweden?

By Catherine J. Frompovich

Do you love your cell phone enough to get cancer from using it? If you do, then please stop reading now because what you will learn ought to scare the ‘bejeepers’ out of you and all cell phone users.

If you don’t happen to know, for most folks, cell phone use has become an addiction—really!  How upset do you become if you cannot find your cell phone? How long can you go without checking your cell phone for a text?

According to a research study titled Smartphone addiction creates imbalance in brain, study suggests” published November 30, 2017 by Radiological Society of North America,

Researchers have found an imbalance in the brain chemistry of young people addicted to smartphones and the internet. More study is needed to understand the clinical implications of the findings, but Dr. Seo believes that increased GABA in the anterior cingulate gyrus in internet and smartphone addiction may be related to the functional loss of integration and regulation of processing in the cognitive and emotional neural network.

The good news is GABA to Glx ratios in the addicted youth significantly decreased or normalized after cognitive behavioral therapy. “The increased GABA levels and disrupted balance between GABA and glutamate in the anterior cingulate cortex may contribute to our understanding the pathophysiology of and treatment for addictions,” Dr. Seo said.

However, there’s a disclosure I have to make in the interest of transparency: I never use a cell phone (although I own one for emergency use); am perfectly content not being ‘tethered’ to a piece of technology; and my world doesn’t come to an end if I don’t hear what my friend(s) had for breakfast or how many times a friend’s cat vomited yesterday.

The real sad story about cell phone addiction is the rising rates of cancers, especially head cancers, as statistically verified in a recent report out of Sweden. That report confirmed cancers of the thyroid, in the mouth, pituitary gland inside the brain, and brain gliomas were dramatically on the increase.

According to the Swedish organization Stralskyddsstiftelse, Swedish Radiation Protection Foundation,

Cancers in the head and the neck are increasing in Sweden according to the latest cancer incidence data from the Swedish Cancer Registry. Cancers in the thyroid and the mouth are among the cancers that have seen the sharpest rise during the last decade but also the trend for cancers of the pituitary are on the rise. Among men aged 50 -79 years malignant brain tumours, grade 3-4 are also increasing visibly. The increase of these cancers has coincided with increasing use of mobile phones during the same time period while the increasing trend of malignant brain tumours, gliomas, might be an effect of long term use of mobile phones. Source

If readers go to the above link, where the stats are published using Swedish language, you can see how various cancers have risen over the years.

Thyroid cancer from 1970 to 2016

Women (kvinnor) were impacted more than men (mān), and the increase in women since 2008 has been over 150%.

Cancers in the mouth, pharynx and tongue affect men more than women.

Pituitary cancers

The cases of cancers for both men and women during the years 1970 to 2016 have run similar courses with slightly higher rates for women.

Gliomas, malignant brain tumors, stats indicate higher rates for men than women. In 2003, rates began to climb for men, while women’s stats indicate a rise for them started around 2013.

However, a pronounced rate of increase was observed in men 50 to 79 years of age, the apparently longest age-group-users for cell phones, which began using cell phones in the 1990s.

The Swedish Radiation Protection Foundation encourages the public to become aware of the emerging ‘trend’ in cell phone radiation cancers,  and to become educated about the dangers of exposures from cell phones; to take measures to protect children from cell phone radiation and, I want to add, from Wi-Fi GHz microwave radiation.

Here’s what SRPF counters experts and the industry with regarding the new data of increased brain tumors and other cancers in the Swedish population taken from cancer registries:

The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority and some experts with ties to industry have argued during the last years that there are no health risks from mobile phone use since there are no increased incidence in brain tumours in Swedish and other cancer registries. These new data shows [sic] that the argument is not only wrong from an ethical point, it is also not in line with the data.

What consumers, who use high-tech, “smart” appliances and gadgets, need to realize and thoroughly understand is that any device which receives or sends data, photos, voice, information, etc. wirelessly uses microwave technology, the same technology that runs cell phones with the same type of radiation exposures and risks.

However, the above Swedish cancer stats do not report growing problems associated with wearing ‘live’ cell phones in your trousers pants pockets; attached to/on your belt; inside your bra; or strapped to your body while runnin.  Furthermore, no ‘live’ microwave transmitting device ever should be worn on a human’s body, in my opinion. Why? I’ve heard too many sad and “if I only knew” personal stories from young adults about getting tumors where they carried their ‘live’ cell phones on their bodies.
