Ireland votes ‘Yes’ to EU fiscal pact – official results

Sixty point three per cent of Irish voters elected to ratify the European Fiscal Compact, according to the official final tally. The turnout in the referendum was reported at 50 per cent.

Advance opinion polls predicted a closer result, but in the end only five of 43 constituencies had a majority vote against.

The European Union said that it would block further bailouts to the debt-stricken country if Ireland did not vote for the pact, which will force it to further reduce its budget deficit.
