Iraqi Sunni tribal sheikh admits sending men to fight against Bashar al-Assad in Syria

Several tribal sheikhs admited their men had gone to Syria to fight the forces
of Mr Assad. But they reject the allegation of al-Qaeda ties.

Far from being al-Qaeda supporters, these tribal sheikhs led the local Sahwa,
or “Awakening” brigades that turned against the terrorist movement in 2006,
repelled by its violence and the fact that many of its members were from
Saudi Arabia, Yemen and elsewhere. With American support, they largely
defeated al-Qaeda in Iraq, though regular attacks persist across the country.

“Al-Qaeda are no way sending people to Syria to fight the regime,” said Sheikh
Hamid al-Hayis, another local tribal and former Sahwa leader. “But it does
seek out unstable areas.”

The sheikhs also deny that if President Assad fell, al-Qaeda or other Sunni
Islamist militants would take over. “We can hold off al-Qaeda,” Sheikh
Ashour Juru al-Bu Mahal, another tribal leader with men fighting inside
Syria, said. “We have experience. We have fought against them before. We
know how to do it.”

Estimates of the numbers joining the struggle against the Assad regime vary.
The sheikh who spoke anonymously estimated the total numbers in Syria as
being in the hundreds. Weapons shipments too remain limited: the £45,000 the
sheikh has raised bought 100 Kalashnikovs, 50 rocket-propelled grenade
launchers, and a few sniper rifles. The Free Syrian Army remains massively
out-gunned by the regime’s troops.

“A hundred Kalashnikovs are not going to bring down Assad,” he admitted.
