Iraqi security forces, backed by the al-Hashid al-Shaabi militia, reached central Tikrit Tuesday, according to a statement by Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi’s office.
The Iraqi forces took control of the western and southern parts of Tikrit and are being supported by the Iraqi air forces and the U.S.-led international coalition.
“The Iraqi joint forces managed to seize control of tens of government building in the southern part of the city, including presidential palaces,” Jassem Jabara, chief of the security committee of Saladin province’s council, told.
Jassem said that “seizing one third of the city is a good sign of Tikrit’s liberation.”
Meanwhile, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced the capture of all three presidential palaces of Tikrit and al-Alam Bridge, which connects Tikrit with the eastern town of al-Alam.
“The heroes of central police managed to completely liberate the government compound and other security centers,” Brigadier Saeed Maen, spokesman of the Ministry of Defense, said in a statement.
