On Tuesday, a demonstration was held in front of the Kurdish parliament building in Arbil to protest against the article, which was published in the latest issue of Chirpa (The Whisper)– also known as Al-Hamsa in Arabic — a monthly magazine published in Kurdish and Arabic.
Groups of demonstrators began throwing rocks and water bottles at security forces and attempted to scale the concrete walls surrounding the compound, while others attacked nearby stores selling alcohol.
The article describes an imaginary conversation between the author and God.
The author of the article also posted a video on YouTube showing him tearing out pages of two suras from the Holy Qur’an.
The demonstrators called on the Kurdistan Regional Government to add a clause to the region’s constitution to prevent such stories from appearing in media outlets.
On Monday, the Kurdish authorities closed down the magazine and arrested its editor.
