Iraq volunteer forces announce liberation of Qahtaniyah near Sinjar

FNA- Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) announced on Sunday the liberation of the town of Qahtaniyah, near Sinjar, from the ISIL terror groups, media reports said.

The volunteer forces, also known as Hashd al-Shaabi, said they had encircled the town in their earlier advances and engaged in clashes with ISIL militants, NRT reported.

Qahtaniyah, also known as Gird Ozera, was supposed to be liberated by Peshmerga forces within the scope of Article 140 and an agreement between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region.

The volunteer forces launched their attack on May 12 to liberate the district of al-Qayrawan and areas near the Syrian border from ISIL militants who captured the area in 2014.

The Hashd al-Shaabi forces on May 23 announced the liberation of the Center of al-Qayrawan in West Mosul.

Iraq’s army relies on Hashid al-Shaabi in its battle against ISIL militants as they battle to expel the militants from their last holdouts in Western Mosul.

The Iraqi forces once planned to liberate Tal Afar, the West gate of Mosul which was seen as a key point in taking back control of the city. But the liberation was delayed several times due to regional disputes.
