Ali Musa Daqduq’s lawyer said Monday that the Central Criminal Court of Iraq declared him not guilty for lack of evidence against him.
“No document was provided that indicates the guilt of Daqduq, and all of what was shown to the court were copies and not originals. There was no testimony and the charges had no foundation,” his lawyer Abdulmahdi al-Mutairi said, adding that it is not clear when exactly he will be freed.
Daqduq was arrested in 2007 over accusations that he had trained Iraqi militias and plotted the killing of five US soldiers.
Daqduq, who was held in US custody, was handed over to Iraqi authorities in December 2011 after US forces withdrew from Iraq.
Nine officials from the US Embassy in Baghdad attended his trial but there was no reaction from Washington on the ruling.
