Iraq rejects US anti-Iran claim on Syria

“Iraq does not allow its land or its skies to be a passage for weapons in any direction, and from any source,” AFP quoted Nouri al-Maliki as saying in a statement released by his office on Friday.

He added that Iran’s aid batches sent to Syria through Iraq were “only carrying humanitarian goods, not weapons.”

The Iraqi premier emphasized that Baghdad was “pushing towards finding a political solution to the Syrian situation… (and) to avoid more bloodshed.”

On Thursday, Iran sent the first consignment of humanitarian supplies, including medicines and medical equipment, to Syria to help people affected by the unrelenting unrest in the Arab country.

The first shipment of Iran’s aid to the friendly country has been delivered in line with the broad relations between the two countries and Tehran’s support for Damascus, following the recent developments, Iran’s Ambassador to Syria Mohammad Reza Raouf Sheibani said.

Later on Thursday, Tehran sent a second consignment of humanitarian aid, including food and medical supplies, to Damascus.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry says Tehran will continue to support the Syrian people.

The Washington Times claimed on Thursday that Iran was dispatching weapons to Syria via Iraqi air space.

It cited an unnamed US official as claiming that Iraq refused “several” US requests to either stop Iranian cargo flights bound for Syria or allow them to be inspected.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March and many people, including security forces, have lost their lives in the violence.
