Iraq rejects foreign meddling in Syria

“We stress that there must be a political solution and national dialog and the rejection of foreign intervention in order to preserve the unity of Syria,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

“We support and we are committed to the decision of the Arab League and we express our appreciation regarding the efforts being pursued by the UN-Arab League joint envoy Kofi Annan,” Zebari added.

The Iraqi official made the comment as Arab foreign ministers held talks in the Iraqi capital Baghdad ahead of an Arab League summit on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the Syrian government accepted Annan’s peace plan, which aims to end the year-long unrest in the country.

Annan’s proposal includes a ceasefire, access for humanitarian aid agencies as well as political dialog between Damascus and the opposition.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.
