TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Spokesman for the Iranian administration Mohammad Baqer Nobakht said the country’s population is set to reach 84 million at the end of the 6th quinquennial development plan (2016-2021).
In a meeting with members of the incoming parliament, Nobakht said a proportional plan for economic growth has been considered to gain the population growth rate of 2.1 and avert public aging in Iran.
A sharp decline in birth rates in recent years has caused concern in Iran.
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has repeatedly raised the alarm over the negative impacts of aging population, calling for essential scientific planning to encourage population growth.
Back in June 2015, the Leader sent a proclamation to President Hassan Rouhani and outlined the general policies of the country’s 6th quinquennial development plan.
The document lays out a grand five-year plan for Iran’s development from 2016 to 2021.
Comprising 80 provisions, the document has put an emphasis on policies to turn the tide of decreasing population.
