The comment comes ahead of the fresh round of talks between Iran and the representatives of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (Russia, China, France, Britain and the US) plus Germany (P5+1) in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Wednesday.
The latest round of talks between Tehran and the P5+1 was held in the Turkish city of Istanbul on April 14. Both sides hailed the discussions as constructive.
Iran and the P5+1 had previously held two rounds of talks, one in Geneva, Switzerland, in December 2010, and another in Istanbul, Turkey, in January 2011.
Press TV has talked with senior editor of Veterans Today, Gurdon Duff to further discuss the issue. The following is an approximate transcript of the interview.
Press TV: Mr. Duff the United States pressing ahead with more unilateral measures against Iran over its nuclear energy program. We’re of course hearing today in the news the senate has been approving new sanctions just ahead of the new round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 group in Baghdad. Now what signal is the US senate sending and is this going to influence do you think the atmosphere of these talks?
Duff: Well, it is designed to interfere with the talks totally. The sanctions are essentially being dictated to the United States government during an election year by the nation of Israel and their extremely powerful lobby.
They are demonstrating their control of the American political system economically and their ability to operate the American Congress as hand puppet.
President Obama has been taking a more independent tact where although he has supported sanctions he has also supported diplomatic initiatives as well which has angered Israel and they have put up hundreds of millions of dollars to have him defeated in the upcoming election but this has nothing to do with the US.
The US has a tremendous need economically to reopen markets with Iran, to reopen trade with Iran and this current state of affairs is the disaster.
Press TV: Your saying that president Obama at the same time that he is pursuing sanctions against Iran, he is also pursuing the diplomatic route, talking of dialogue.
But how is this going to work when you are entering into dialogue even before dialogue starts- of course the second round of talks in Baghdad you are introducing sanctions. Now is this a dual approach of pressure and dialogue at the same time? How does president Obama think if he is following that this is going to work?
Duff: Well, if you just simply step back and look at the situation itself one of the editors of the publication, Clinton Bastin, a former nuclear weapons designer from the department of energy, he had worked there for 43 years.
He is a close friend of several of the IAEA inspectors who have been in Iran and Clinton has published within our magazine that these inspectors that have been to Iran are utterly unqualified with no nuclear weapon if they tripped over one in their home.
They shouldn’t be there and these are his own friends. The IAEA is a farce. The statements made about it- its prejudice. The fact that it’s controlled by Israel, these are very true things.
The only response that any of us gets to that is that we’re personally attacked as anti-Semites, we’re attacked or manipulated in some way, any American politician…
Press TV: I’d just like to interrupt there because we’re short of time despite, you know that the national intelligence estimates since 2007 have said that Iran has not been seeking nuclear weapons.
Washington and Tel Aviv continue to alert that Iran’s nuclear program is not peaceful. Even Israel’s intelligence service Mossad has acknowledged that there is no proof that Tehran is carrying out a nuclear weapons program. So why do you think these allegations are turning up again?
Duff: It’s taking advantage of an election year that there is some unusual crisis, we’re a world intelligence organization and we have found that a significant number of members of Congress, people in white hall in Britain are being blackmailed to support policies they know are false.
We all know there is conclusive proof that there is no nuclear weapons program in Iran. That it is impossible to enrich [weapons grade] uranium within Iran. The estimate we have and we have nuclear weapons experts here in staff is that in ten years Iran can build a nuclear weapon about the size of a garbage truck, if given the chance.
All of this, we all know is false. We all know it’s going on. This rhetoric is going on as simply manipulation and it’s not just manipulation for war but behind the scenes there are series of major political crimes that are being committed by this drive to war with Iran. They are threatening Iran. They are also robbing the United States blind.
They are manipulating fuel prices and food prices at the same time behind the shield of this phony drive toward war backed by nothing but lies and certainly of course every word that is said goes against our own national intelligence estimate. What you’ve said is totally correct.
