Iran’s former FM confers with top Syrian officials

January 22- The Iran Project – Iranian former foreign minister and Head of Strategic Council on Foreign Relations Kamal Kharrazi arrived in Syria on Wednesday (Jan. 17) to hold talks with the Syrian top officials on issues of mutual interests.

While in Syria, he has held meetings with several high-ranking Syrian officials including Ali Haidar, Syria’s State Minister for National Reconciliation Affairs,  Deputy Secretary General of Syria’s Ba’ath party Hilal al-Hilal, Syrian president Bashar Assad as well as Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem.

In a meeting with Haidar, Kharrazi stressed that the presence of the United States on the territory of Syria does not contribute to peace in the country, and the Islamic Republic of Iran considers the presence illegitimate.

Syrian minister, for his part, stated that Syria will pass the crisis successfully with the help of allies.

Referring to the long-standing relations between Iran and Syria, Haidar noted that the two countries are fighting on the same front and will win together.

Talking to al-Hilal, the Iranian official said despite recent victories, Syria is still facing problems on behalf of the US, Turkey, and some other hostile countries.

Al-Hilal, also said that Syria’s enemies over the past years have been angry with the unity between the Islamic Republic and Hezbollah and created the Syrian crisis.

During a meeting, al-Assad said that victory over terrorism in Syria and Iraq, along with Iran’s resilience in the nuclear issue, foiled the plot devised for the region that sought to fragment its states, violate their sovereignty, and seize control of their independent decision-making.

For his part, Kharazi congratulated President al-Assad and the Syrian people for the victories achieved against terrorists, the most recent of them being recovering Abu al-Dohour airport, voicing confidence that more achievements will follow both on the political and military levels.

Talking to Muallem, Kharrazi stresses the need for restoring sovereignty to the entire Syrian territory.

For this part, Syria’s Foreign Minister said, “In view of developments on the ground, it was expected that foreign sponsors of terrorists in Syria would stop interfering in Syrian domestic affairs. However, it appears that US insists that these countries should continue their interference.”
