‘Iranians not to submit to bullying’

“Iranian people are familiar with [various] aspects of [international] sanctions and understand the pressure that they exert on welfare, health, and other areas of personal and social life of the Iranian society…but are determined not to give in to extortion by foreigners,” Deputy Head of the Iranian Armed Forces’ Joint Chiefs of Staff Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri noted on Wednesday.

The commander added that the Iranian nation has always succeeded in turning threats into opportunities and this is also true about sanctions, a press release by the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

“During the past 30 years, Iranian citizens [have suffered] from shortages caused by sanctions [but] have worked with the government to combat sanctions and have, therefore, been able to go around sanctions and adapt their life to them,” Jazayeri noted.

He emphasized that the Iranian nation will never allow the country’s officials and mangers to compromise on such issues as the acquisition of the nuclear energy and other technologies as a result of foreign pressures.

The senior Iranian military commander further stressed that the main reason the foreign powers are imposing sanctions on Iran is not their fear of Iran’s progress in various technological, industrial and defense sectors, rather it is the Islamic nature of the Islamic Revolution that they are mostly afraid of, since it has led to their global downturn.

At the beginning of 2012, the United States and European Union (EU) approved new sanctions against Iran’s oil and financial sectors which aim to prevent other countries from purchasing Iranian oil or transacting with its central bank.

Washington and EU claim that the bans are meant to pressure the Islamic Republic to give up its nuclear energy program, which they claim includes a military component.

Iran dismisses such charges arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to use the nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

International legal experts have frequently noted that despite the West’s claims that sanctions are aimed at the Iranian government, they actually target the everyday life of ordinary Iranians and are therefore liable to legal action in international judicial bodies as violation of international humanitarian law.
