Iranian MPs tasked with monitoring JCPOA to visit nuclear facilities

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A number of members of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, who are tasked with monitoring the implementation of the recent nuclear deal with six world powers (known as JCPOA), plan to visit nuclear facilities in Arak and Natanz on Saturday.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency on Friday, Mohammad Hassan Asafari, a member of the parliamentary commission, said according to the schedule, the process of monitoring the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) will begin concurrently with the visit by the lawmakers to Natanz nuclear facility and Arak heavy-water reactor.

He said the objective behind the trip to the nuclear sites is to examine whether the centrifuges installed there have been decommissioned or not.

The parliamentarian also said Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi, Esmail Kowsari, Hossein Sobhani-Nia and also himself as well as some other MPs will pay the visit to the nuclear facilities.

The reports of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission on monitoring JCPOA will be submitted to the presiding board of the parliament every six month.

Earlier on Tuesday, Spokesman for the Iranian administration and Vice-President Mohammad Baqer Nobakht announced that the government has established a committee to monitor the implementation of the nuclear deal.

Back on November 1, Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said the Foreign Ministry would closely cooperate with the committee, saying any action regarding the JCPOA will be taken based on the decisions made by the committee.

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei had ordered the formation of the committee on October 21.

The existence of complexities and ambiguities in the JCPOA and the possibility of breach of commitments and deception on the part of the other side, especially the US, necessitate that a strong, observant and smart committee be formed to monitor the progress of works, fulfilment of the other side’s commitments and realization of the observations mentioned, Ayatollah Khamenei stated in a letter to President Hassan Rouhani.

The committee’s arrangement and responsibilities should be formulated and approved by the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), Imam Khamenei said at the time.
