Iran welcomes restarting talks with P5+1

In a letter to the office of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Wednesday, Jalili stressed the necessity of conducting constructive and serious talks without preconditions to achieve long-lasting cooperation.

On February 15, Jalili sent a letter to Ashton saying Iran is ready to restart negotiations over its nuclear energy program with the P5+1 — Britain, China, France, Russia, the US plus Germany.

On March 8, the P5+1 also announced readiness to resume multifaceted talks.

Iran and the P5+1 held two rounds of multifaceted talks in Geneva in December 2010 and in the Turkish city of Istanbul in January 2011.

While Tehran says it is ready to continue talks based on common grounds, it has stressed that it will not give up any of its rights.

Jalili added that he welcomes Ashton’s stance on respecting Iran’s right to use peaceful nuclear energy according to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The US, Israel and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran has refuted the allegations, arguing that as a signatory to the NPT and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Tehran is entitled to the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
